Reconcile your bank balance

Reconciling means checking that the balance in Tyms matches the balance your bank shows. When they agree, you can trust your reports.

The two balances

  • Tyms Balance (also called Book balance) is worked out from the opening balance plus every transaction in Tyms.

  • Bank Balance is what your bank says, on a given date. It comes from your statements and syncs, or you add it yourself.

When they differ, the bank's card shows Balances don't match.

Record your bank balance

  1. Open the bank and choose the Bank balances tab.

  2. Click Add balance.

  3. Pick the Date and enter the Balance amount from your bank, then click Save.

    Add bank balance

Uploaded statements add their closing balance here automatically. Use ⋮ on a row to edit or delete a balance.

When the balances don't match

Work through these in order:

  1. Are all transactions in? Check that you've uploaded every statement up to the balance date, with no gaps or duplicates.

  2. Is anything uncategorised or still processing? Look at the Reconciliation summary on Bank transactions.

  3. Is the opening balance right? Once every transaction is in and categorised, set the bank's opening balance:

    • Go to Chart of Accounts and edit the bank's account.

    • Adjust the Opening balance by the difference between the two balances, and date it the day before your first transaction.

    Reconciliation summary

The info tip next to Book balance in the summary names your first transaction date.

Tips

  • Reconcile monthly. It's much easier to find one missing line in a month than in a year.

  • Transfers between your banks must be categorised to the other bank account, or both balances will be off.
