Train Adam with bank rules

Bank rules tell Adam how to categorise your transactions, for example "anything from Stripe is Sales". Good rules mean fewer corrections and accurate books from your first upload.

Open Banking → Bank Rules, or click Create rules on your getting-started checklist.

Bank Rules page

Click Create Rule and choose one of two ways.

Option 1: Bulk generate with AI (fastest)

  1. Choose Bulk generate with AI.

  2. Upload a recent bank statement: PDF, CSV, XLSX, XLS, PNG or JPEG, up to 10 MB. CSV works best; a small share of PDFs can't be read. You can also click Or paste a page from your bank statement instead.

  3. Click Generate. Adam studies your transactions and suggests rules.

  4. Review the suggestions and keep the ones that are right.

Option 2: Create one manually

  1. Choose Create one manually.

  2. Give the rule a Rule name, e.g. Stripe payouts → Sales.

  3. Pick the Rule approach, for example Apply all the conditions (AND).

  4. Optionally limit it to one Bank Account.

  5. Under Conditions, add one or more lines: IF field operator value (e.g. Description contains "STRIPE").

  6. Under Outcomes, add what should happen: SET Account AS Sales.

  7. Tick Make active on save. Tick Apply to historical transactions to recategorise what's already imported.

  8. Click Submit.

Rules worth creating first

  • Payment processor payouts (Stripe, PayPal, Shopify) → Sales

  • Payroll transfers → Salaries

  • Rent and utilities → their expense accounts

  • Bank charges and fees → Bank charges

  • Your biggest customers and suppliers

Tips

  • Make conditions specific. Contains "AMAZON WEB SERVICES" is safer than contains "AMAZON".

  • The table shows each rule's Status, Conditions and Outcome. Turn rules off instead of deleting them while you test.

  • You can also give Adam general instructions under Settings → Train Adam.
